Cycling the Moselle Valley, Trier to Koblenz
Day 1, Sunday: Transfer to Trier - Germany's oldest city
You are welcomed at the airport or railway station (depending on your arrangements) and taken to the hotel in the heart of Trier. The Romans founded the city on the Moselle in around 16 B.C. Many buildings from that time are still standing today and open for you to visit: the impressive city gate Porta Nigra, the Emperor Thermal Springs and the amphitheatre, to mention but a few.
In the evening we gather at the restaurant, where you will meet your fellow cyclists and together be able to sample the local wines for the first time.
Day 2, Monday: Cycling along the rivers Moselle and Saar to Saarburg
After getting your bicycle in the morning you will be ready for today’s gentle ride up the Moselle. A flat route in between the river and the vineyards will lead us to Saarburg. The place is famous for its waterfall in the town centre, surrounded by little shops and cosy cafés that invite us for a break. Back in Trier, you get ready for dinner at one of Trier’s finest restaurants.
(21 miles/33 km, picnic included)
Day 3, Tuesday: Meeting a Roman patrician for a walk
After a restful night we plunge into Trier's past on a walk with a Roman patrician. Our host used to live here in the third century – before it became the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Replete with fascinating tales and history, you can enjoy yourself at the historic sites or rest in one of the many cafés.
In the early afternoon we will start cycling again. It is about 34km down the Moselle today. On cycle paths close by the river we will pass more vineyards and finally get to Leiwen where we conclude the day with the usual group dinner.
(21 miles/34 km, lunch on your own today)
Day 4, Wednesday: Cycling through charming small Moselle villages
Quaint little villages and vineyards to the left and to the right guide our way again today. Some of the hillsides, like Trittenheimer Apotheke and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, enjoy a very high reputation amongst wine lovers worldwide.
After mid-day we will reach Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a guided walk right through its history, past chocolate-box architecture and hearing about amusing myths. There is talk of a wine from a tiny hillside above the town, the Doctorwein. Since 1620, this very special drink has made diseased people fit and fit people happy.
You may pass the remaining afternoon with a visit to the ruin of Landshut Castle, a walk around the picturesque old town or a hunt for your own Doctorwein.
(19 miles/30 km, picnic included)
Day 5, Thursday: A black cat along the way
From Bernkastel-Kues we follow the Moselle’s winding route through the countryside and reach Zell in the afternoon. The town is known for its vineyard Zell's Black Cat. In 1863 three merchants, about to purchase local wine, were very uncertain as to which cask to buy. So the tasting went on and on. Finally, the winegrower's black cat leapt onto one of the casks, arched its back threateningly and hissed at anyone who came closer. Taking this as a sign, the decision was made and a famous name born. Nowadays, 80% of this wine production is sold outside Germany.
(25 miles/40 km, picnic included)
Day 6, Friday: Cycling the Moselle to Reichburg Castle in Cochem
Reichsburg Castle, built on a rock above Cochem, is where we cycle to today. On a guided tour through its halls and chambers we come upon the old wooden balcony and have a magnificent view over town and countryside. We may even spot our shuttle, which will get us to Koblenz later in the afternoon. (23 miles/37 km, picnic included)
Day 7, Saturday: Shuttle service to the airport
Sadly, it is time to depart. We have to say "Good bye", but we really hope to see you again. Our shuttle service will get you to the train station or nearby airport of your choice.
You may also extend your stay in Koblenz as it offers numerous options to explore the places further up and down the Rhine.
