Cycling the Danube, part II

Day 1, Sunday: strolling the old town's maze of alleys in Regensburg
Arrival at Munich airport and transfer to our hotel in Regensburg. After checking in, we will hand-over the bicycle to you. Since the hotel is in the city centre, you might want to have a first look at Regensburg's old town on your own. Later this day we meet at a very cosy restaurant where we have dinner and get to know each other.

Day 2, Monday: myths from the city's past, start cycling the Danube
After breakfast we get to know Regensburg via a walking city tour. Besides hearing tales from the middle age about Regensburg's inhabitants, we will visit the city's attractions. For example the 'stony wonder', a 300m long stone bridge over the Danube which dates back to the 12th century and is still in use.
Later, after having started cycling in the early afternoon, we pass the Walhalla Hall of Fame, an imitation of the Parthenon temple. From here we enjoy a beautiful view over the Danube and the Bavarian scenery we are going to cycle through. (20 miles/32 km)

Day 3, Tuesday: guided tour through the city tower of Straubing
Today’s section from Worth to Straubing is a particularly short leg. Cycling across fields and through small villages alongside the river, we get to Straubing just around noon. After climbing the city tower, Straubing’s emblem from the 14th century, and enjoying the beautiful panoramic view over the old town, you will spend the remaining day exploring it on your own. In any event, you should not miss visiting the city square with its picturesque architecture. (15 miles/23 km)

Day 4, Wednesday: Bavarian cuisine - more than beer and sauerkraut
On our way to Deggendorf we pass by the Bogen church of pilgrimage. Here in 1104 a child-bearing statue of Maria was found by the river bank. Many childless women came afterwards in hope of help from above. In Deggendorf we will see the Deggendorf dumplings, stony balls connected by a chain, which had to be worn during pillory. Nowadays a local culinary delicacy carries its name.
Those who love to shop, may do so at numerous small shops at the town centre. (25 miles/40 km)

Day 5, Thursday: option to to some additional cycling, walking or swimming in the afternoon
The beauty of cycling next to a river is the flatness of the countryside and the path. We will make this experience again on our way to Vilshofen today - luscious Bavarian countryside, calmness of nature and no traffic. Enjoy Vilshofen by strolling along its small shops, have German beer in a beer garden or do some additional cycling up the Vils river. (25 miles/40 km)

Day 6, Friday: cycling along the Danube to Passau, guided city walk
Passau is now only a stone's throw away. We will reach it by mid-day and see how two rivers flow into the Danube at the same time. The result is a mixture of green Inn, blue Danube and black Ilz water.
In the afternoon, we will do a guided tour of the 'Venice of the North' as the city is also called. Passau is famous for fantastic baroque architecture. You will have the chance to visit St. Steven's Cathedral, housing the biggest organ (17,974 pipes). After dinner, feel free to watch the illuminated castle Veste Oberhaus from Passau's lands end at the confluence or get lost in the old town's tangle of narrow alleys and charming places. (15 miles/24 km)

Day 7, Saturday: transfer to Munich by minibus
Enjoy your last day by strolling through Passau again or going on a Three Rivers Boat Tour - just as you like. Our incorporated airport shuttle service will bring you to Munich today, depending on your further travel arrangements.
